Game 2 - Cardinals vs. Beechboro

(posted by Callum Radecki)

Menzies Oval Mount Hawthorn - Sunday May 2 2010 Weather: Fine Warm

After a firing finish last week against Ellenbrook, the Cardinals were expecting another big game against the Beechboro Bears. Cardies were top of the ladder and the Bears were 12th, and were trying to keep that position locked by beating the Bears over 60 points.

Right from the centre bounce, the Cardies had already started applying pressure on the Bears defence, who could clear the ball out and ended with a goal from Oscar in the box. The clearances from the team were outstanding with the team work of Brandon in the ruck and Aden roving we could not be beaten, and we weren’t. We ended kicking 5 goals to 0 in the first quarter.

The second quarter wasn’t much different with the Cardies starting strong maintaining a consistent flow from the back line to the forward line. Jackson had a huge impact in the quarter, booting numerous goals. In the second half of the quarter, the Bears packed on the goals kicking two in the last 3 minutes. Going into half time, we were well ahead and weren’t too worried about their two goals.

In the third quarter, Louis applied some crunching tackles which would have scared the opponents and set up Chris with lots of clearances which usually ended up being goals. The shepherding was ineffable with the bigger boys putting their bodies on the line for the smaller, faster boys. The scoreboard pressure was killing the Bears; with them on 2 goals and the Cardies on 13 goals, we had the win locked away.
In the fourth quarter, we were playing for the points and to trial tram positions. We were also playing to get over our goal difference of 100 points. In the quarter, the Bears were shattered with no more energy, but we still had a nice fresh bench which were eager to play. The Cardies started off well taking big contested marks and the Cardies making leads with the Bears jogging behind us. We were getting our hands on the ball and using it wisely. In the dying 30 second, all you could hear in the forward 50 was from Oscar in the box shouting out GET TO 100 POINTS!!!!!!!!!

And Chris provided a perfect snap to get us to 105 and Oscar was happy.

Next week is the Doggies, coming off a two week break. We will need to be on our best game.
